A fusion is just two beings combining to form one single, but more powerful, being. Throughout the DragonBall series, there are three types of fusions. One is the Namekian fusion, the next is the Fusion Dance fusion, and last, but not least, the Potora Earing fusion.
Namekian Fusion: In this fusion, the Namek just combines with the other Namek, usually by touching him, and keeping his hand there while they fuse. The Namek that takes control of the body, will remain in control forever. The other Namek is gone, and there is no way to unfuse.
Fusion Dance: In this fusion, the two Saiya-Jins (note I said Saiya-Jins, because the only people I've seen fuse using this technique, have been the Saiya-Jins) must do a dance, and they must both do it the same, otherwise it'll turn out wrong.
Potora Earing Fusion: Last, but not least, is the Potora Earing fusion. In this fusion, the two beings must each put on one earing, each having it on the opposite ear (for one being one on the left, and the other being on the right.)
As with mostly everything in life, there are some rules that apply to these fusions, the Namekian fusion being an exception because there aren't any. In the Fusion Dance fusion, the two beings must be about the same height, weight, and strenth. If one is stronger than the other in strenth, then he/she must lower his/her power level to get it to about the same power level as the other being. Also, the dance must be done perfectly, otherwise they'll fuse incorrectly. Another thing, this fusion only lasts for thirty minutes, and once the time is up, one must wait for an hour before one can fuse again. Now, the Potora Earing fusion; when the two beings fuse, they remain fused like that forever, unless they are consumed by some other being (like Buu.)
